Billu: Serious disappointment

This film was released on 13th feb. Directed by Priyadarshan and expected to be a good movie.
This movie was about a barber 'Billu' played by Irfaan Khan & how his life is changed when a renowned filmstar Sahir Khan played by SRK comes to his village. I had a lot of hope with this movie due to two reasons: 1) Priyadarshan was coming up with a movie after so long.
2) Lead is played by a great actor Irfaan Khan.
but my hope shattered when I watched the movie because I think the simplicity which was used to be the speciallity of Priyadarshan's movie was lost due to over hyped character of Shahrukh Khan.
Many times I got the feeling that SRK is playing the main lead and that's where I felt that the film was failed. Irfaan Khan once again proved with his acting that he is one of the finest actor this industry has ever ever seen. Lara Dutta was effective in the character of a simple house wife of village. Mistakes do happen but Priyadarshan is a talented filmmaker & we can hope a better movie from him next time.

Dev D: An actor in making

This month started with the screening of Anurag kashyap's yet another adventurous and daring movie Dev D. Dev D is the modern take on novel 'Devdas' written by Sarat Chandra, despite of this Dev D is very much different from its earlier versions. Very beautifully conceptulised and implemented on the screen. Something different for the movie lovers. Music was owesome. Every body is aware of the popularity of the song ' Emotional atyachar'. As far as acting is concerned Abhay Deol was good but somwhere down the line I felt that he failed to depict that magic that should be depicted by the character of Devdas, except him most of the faces in the film were new but every one performed well. One thing which i felt about this is that if earlier Devdas was about love this one was about sex. In Abhay Deol's own words it is an honest and true tale of sex.
Film started well but in the mid it became slighty boring that part could be better. Acting was superb, screenplay was good. It is an entertaining and must watch movie. In short it is a break from the monotonus love stories of bollywood. I agree with the rating given to it by Times. Hats off to Abhay Deol.

Fabulous February

Slumdog millionaire: A Race to Oscars
February had been a wonderful month from the point of view of indian cinema. In this crucial time of economic depression the success of this movie at Oscars brought a smile on the face of millions of movie lovers in India. 22nd feb became the memorable day for every Indian movie lover as the movie with Indian crew was successful to bring 8 Oscars including the 'best movie of the year'. The winning of Oscars by A.R. Rehman, Gulzar & Resul Pookutty really made India proud. This success also brought a lot of questions with it as well.
What does this success actually mean to Indian cinema?
Is it right to consider slumdog as an Indian movie?

I can't really answer the first question but one thing is clear that it definately made India proud & made it recognized on Global screen.
As far as the second question is concerned I personally believe that though the production is not Indian but the spirit of the movie was Indian. It proved that we have the potiential to compete with the world's best film industries provided that potential is recognized and put in proper direction. The world cannot be biased towards Indian cinema any longer.
One thing that is also proved by this success is that its not the budget or big names that matter what matters is the content & its proper presentation on the screen.
